Tra mito, storia e folclore, ecco che l’estate calabrese offre uno dei suggestivi viaggi tra presente e passato, dove è possibile riscoprire la magia di un borgo, come Squillace, dove dal 2010 si svolge l’evento “Taranta e dintoni”, curato dall’associazione “Aggregazioni” con l’intento di “creare un’occasione unica per poter vivere due giornate (13 e 14 agosto) indimenticabili tra i colori della danza, la gioia della musica, il fascino dell’arte e la tipicità dei prodotti locali”.

Squillace è un borgo le cui origini si perdono nel lungo trascorrere del tempo. La leggenda narra che fu Ulisse a fondarla, quando in ritorno da Troia approdò, dopo una tempesta, in una zona pianeggiante tra il fiume Corace e il fiume Alessi.

Un’atmosfera densa di magia e mistero pervade i vicoli dell’antico centro urbano, che grazie a “Taranta e dintorni” si tingono dei colori delle antiche danze calabre. I tamburelli e le fisarmoniche suonano un ritmo trascinante e le danzatrici trasmettono il loro sapere a chi voglia cimentarsi. I maestri della ceramica raccontano il loro antico mestiere, accogliendo gli avventori nelle loro suggestive botteghe, ricche di opere realizzate con una perizia che affonda le sue radici nella civiltà bizantina.

E dopo una visita all’imponente cattedrale, ai musei e alle mostre allestite per l’occasione, si sale su, verso il maestoso castello normanno che domina dall’alto della collina.

Nei pressi dell’antico maniero si trovano gli stand di prodotti enogastronomici, il cui sapore dolce ed intenso rimanda al sole delle campagne Calabresi. E infine il palco, allestito nella piazza di fronte al castello, dove il 13 agosto si sono esibiti gli “Skunchiunuti” e i “Mascarimiri” e nella serata successiva i “Musicanti del vento” e gli “Etnosound”.

Sonorità, ritmi e ballate profondamente legati alle radici della gente calabra, che hanno accompagnato allegri momenti di danza e aggregazione tra il folto pubblico presente.

Visitare queste manifestazioni, che si svolgono un po’ ovunque in Calabria, significa riscoprire il fascino più autentico di questa terra dal passato millenario.

Una regione, la Calabria, la cui storia riecheggia nei libri di scuola senza fare rumore, le cui bellezze restano inesplorate e i tesori sepolti tra inconsapevolezza e inettitudine.

Tuttavia qualcosa sta cambiando e nei giovani e negli intellettuali si scorge una voglia di rivalsa che si spera sarà alla base di un nuovo, grande movimento di rinascita.

“Taranta and surroundings”, the village of Squillace glows history, art and folklore

Calabrian summer offers suggestive journeys among mith, history and folklore, where you may discover the magic of a village  like Squillace. Here, since 2010, the event “Taranta and surroundings” takes place. It is curated by the association “Aggregazioni” and aims to “create a unique occasion to live two unforgettable days (13 and 14 August) among the colors of dance, the joy of music, the charm of art and the local products typical taste ”.

Squillace is an ancient village whose origins are lost in the mists of time. The legend tells that it was founded by Ulixes returning from Troy after a storm and landing in a flat area between Corace and Alessi rivers.

A magic and mysterious atmosphere pervades the streets of the ancient urban centre, where thanks to “Taranta and surroundings”, the colors of the ancient calabrian dances shine. Tambourines and accordions play an exhilarating rhythm and the dancers hand down their knowledge to those who want to experiment with dancing. The masters of ceramic tell the history of their ancient craft, receiving the customers in their suggestive workshops, rich in works made with a Byzantine technique.

After a visit to the majestic cathedral, to the museums and to the exhibitions set up for the occasion, you can go up toward the magnificent  Norman castle which dominates from the top of the hill.

Near the ancient castle there are stands of wine and culinary products, whose sweet and strong taste remind the sun of the calabrian country. Finally, in the square opposite the castle, the stage, where on the August 13^th the“Skunchiunuti” and the “Mascarimiri” bands performed and the night after it was time for the “Musicanti del vento” and the “Etnosound”.

Visiting these events, that occur all over the place in Calabria, means rediscover the most authentic charm of a land with a millenary past. A region like Calabria, whose history is echoed in textbooks without making noise, whose secret beauties stay unexplored and whose treasures are buried between indifference and ineffectiveness.

Nevertheless something is changing and, in young people  and in intellectuals you can find a desire of revenge and it is hoped that this will be at the heart of a great renewal movement.
